A Slice of Laramie is Blown Away

We all complain about the wind in Laramie, but just to mix things up a little, let me say something I love about it. Two somethings, actually.

I love the little tinkling sounds wind chimes make, and now that I live in Laramie I get to hear them almost all the time. I know that not everyone feels this way, however. I once opened my door to a friend who was coming over for a meeting, and found her clutching my wind chime. “I have to hear these every Tuesday when we have our meeting,” she said through gritted teeth. “I can’t handle it anymore.” She handed me the wind chime. “I’ll hang it back up when I leave.” And she did. The wind chime removal was a weekly tradition for us, until she moved somewhere with calmer air.

The other thing I love about the wind is that you get lots of days of reliable kite weather. I love flying kites. When my parents left this weekend and it warmed up again (sorry Mom), the kids and I took the kite out to the field behind our house. We enjoyed several whole minutes of kite flying until the wind snapped the center dowel rod and the kite collapsed into a thorn bush.
