The University of Wyoming’s Department of Music invites the public to experience “An Evening of Brazilian Music for Viola and Piano” on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. This free recital promises a delightful showcase of Brazilian compositions.
The program features works by composers Francisca Aquino, Brenno Blauth, Henrique de Curitiba, Lorenzo Fernandez, Ernesto Nazareth, and Ricardo Vasconcelos. Performing will be Luciano Pontes on viola and UW Professor Theresa Bogard on piano.
Meet the Performers
Luciano Pontes hails from Goiânia, Brazil, and began playing violin at 15 before transitioning to viola. A graduate of Goiás University, he holds a Doctorate in Cultural Performances, a Master of Music, and a Bachelor of Music. Pontes’ career highlights include performances at Carnegie Hall, numerous prizes in international competitions, and collaborations with top artists worldwide. He is currently a professor at Goiás University and director of the Jean Douliez Chamber Orchestra.
Theresa Bogard, a Steinway Artist and Fulbright grant recipient, is a renowned pianist known for her versatility and dedication to lesser-known works. Her career includes performances on five continents, faculty roles at prestigious international music festivals, and recordings spanning solo piano to chamber music. Bogard has also performed at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall and won recognition at the International Mozart Fortepiano Competition in Belgium.
