Big changes are on the way for one of Laramie’s busiest roads! Starting Monday, crews from Knife River and the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) will begin long-anticipated improvements along US Highway 287/Third Street, stretching from Boswell Drive to Curtis Street. While roadwork may bring some temporary inconveniences, this project is fantastic news for Laramie, promising safer roads, improved accessibility, and a smoother travel experience for everyone.
What’s Changing? Laramie residents and visitors can look forward to several much-needed upgrades, including:
- Fresh Asphalt Surfacing – Say goodbye to potholes and uneven pavement! The new asphalt will create a smoother ride for all motorists.
- ADA Upgrades – Enhanced accessibility features will make the area more inclusive for all community members, including those with disabilities.
- Signal Upgrades – Key intersections at Garfield Street, Grand Avenue, Ivinson Avenue, and University Avenue will see modernized traffic signals for better traffic flow and safety.
- Box Culvert Replacement at Spring Creek Bridge – A necessary improvement to support long-term infrastructure stability.
Minimizing Disruptions To keep businesses and side roads accessible, detours will be provided while work is ongoing. A 12-foot width restriction will be in place, so larger vehicles should plan accordingly. Motorists should expect occasional lane shifts and slower speed limits, but these measures are in place to ensure safety for everyone.
Community Engagement: Open House Event WYDOT and Knife River are committed to keeping the community informed. A public open house will be held on Tuesday, February 27, at 5:30 PM at the Moose Lodge (409 S. 3rd St.). This is a great opportunity for residents and business owners to ask questions and learn more about the project from experts.
Why This Matters for Laramie These improvements will not only make Third Street safer and more efficient but also enhance the overall experience for residents, businesses, and visitors. Infrastructure investments like this one are a sign of growth and progress, ensuring that Laramie continues to be a vibrant and welcoming place to live, work, and travel.
WYDOT will provide regular schedule updates, so stay tuned for more information. In the meantime, let’s all do our part—stay alert, follow detours, and drive cautiously through work zones. A better Third Street is just around the corner!
