One of my kids asked me what the Oregon Trail was last week. I don’t know about you, but I’m a nineties kid, so if you say Oregon Trail my mind instantly goes to the DOS game we got to play as a reward if we finished our schoolwork early. So I answered my child with something blandly historical, then added, “But it’s also the coolest game ever, want to play?”
As we went through the game I realized for the first time how many of the landmarks are actually in Wyoming. We could look up the places on the map and see how far they were from Laramie, as well as see modern photographs of the locations. It made me feel like we were actually learning something in between hunting buffalo and dying of dysentery.
I still don’t know what dysentery is, though.
