Endowed Artists-in-Residence
As part of the University’s 2023-2024 Endowed Artists-in-Residence program, David Dorfman Dance will not only grace the stage but also engage with the community and students.
On Thursday, September 7th, from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m., head to the East Ballroom of UW’s Student Union for an interactive conversation. Join UW faculty member Nevin Aiken, David Dorfman, and company members in exploring the power of movement and the arts to foster peace, empathy, understanding, and human connection. They’ll discuss how movement can be a counter to division, polarization, and violence, reflecting on DDD’s commitment to ‘kinetic diplomacy.’
Free Movement Workshop
Don’t miss a free movement workshop open to all on Saturday, September 9th, at 9:00 a.m. at Dance Studio B. It’s a chance to experience the joy of movement and connect with the dancers.
A (Way) Out of My Body (2021)
The week-long residency will culminate in a performance of the company’s repertory work, “A (Way) Out of My Body (2021).” This mesmerizing piece uses “out-of-body” experiences as a metaphor for our times and our body politic. Dancers will take you on a journey through space and time, seeking to break the barriers of reality and enter the realm of positivity and growth. The performance features an original score composed by DDD’s four-person band.
Q&A Session
Following the performance on September 10th, there will be a 30-minute Q&A session with company members and UW faculty members Nevin Aiken, Matt Daly, and Cat Kamrath-Monson.
Preliminary Showing
Additionally, DDD and UW dance students will present a preliminary showing of their work on Tuesday, September 12th, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts Mains Dance Studio. This showing includes excerpts of TRUCE Song, premiering in Fall 2024, which explores the perils of peace and power, seeking joy in this world and honoring truce with self, with others, and with the world.
