In an effort to reunite Wyoming residents with their unclaimed assets, Governor Mark Gordon is urging everyone in the state to invest just 2 minutes of their time in exploring www.mycash.wyo.gov. A staggering $110 million in Unclaimed Property awaits potential claimants, as confirmed by the Wyoming State Treasurer’s Office.

Governor Gordon, recognizing the importance of spreading awareness, has officially declared February 1 as “Unclaimed Property Day.” Treasurer Curt Meier expressed gratitude for the Governor’s support, highlighting his understanding of the challenges in notifying Wyoming citizens about the substantial sums awaiting reclaim.

Unclaimed properties typically consist of money, stocks, mutual fund shares, and contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes. Treasurer Meier disclosed that in the last fiscal year, over 9,300 checks totaling more than $10.64 million were issued. With an additional $12 million received since then, residents are encouraged to recheck their names, as new unclaimed funds may have been added.

While some properties may be of nominal value, there have been remarkable cases, with one individual receiving over $740,000 in the last fiscal year. The state has already issued six checks exceeding $100,000 in the current fiscal year, the most recent being just shy of $110,000 to a Sublette County resident in January. Nationally, the issue of unclaimed property extends beyond Wyoming, affecting nearly 33 million people in the United States, constituting almost 15% of the population. According to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA), over $2.87 billion was returned by states across the country in the last year. Wyoming residents are encouraged to seize this opportunity to potentially recover forgotten assets and contribute to the nationwide effort of reuniting individuals with their unclaimed property.
