A message from the Laramie Animal Shelter:
“It’s hard to say how many little ghouls and goblins will be out on the streets trick or treating this year with all that is going on in the world. However, if we’ve said it once, we’ll say it again, this is stressful, risky holiday for pets.
Halloween brings strangers to the yard and the door. That blasted bell is ringing, and ringing, and ringing. It’s enough to drive a dog mad. It might even bother the otherwise unperturbable cat.
There are strange creatures walking around. They look funny and slightly alarming. There are smells of candy and chocolate everywhere you turn. There are strings of lights, inflatable yard decorations and things that go “bump” in the night.
Pet owners can help their furry companions stay safe and calm this holiday with just a little planning and forethought. Making sure candy is out of reach. Securing decorations above the canine zone. Monitoring doors and gates with extra vigilance. These actions will all help keep Fido and Fluffy safe and secure.
Consider setting aside an area away from the door and gate if you anticipate trick or treaters or costumed guests. Get Fido and Fluffy all decked out in a quiet, soothing environment away from the hustle and bustle of the door. This will help the furry family members be calm. It will help them relax. It will keep them from bolting as the door stands open to hand out treats. It will help you avoid a dog or cat bite incident if someone gets grabby with them or if the get scared by some of the activities.
A little preplanning can go a long way toward keeping everyone safe and comfortable at home during this strangest of holidays. Enjoy the season and be safe out there.”
