A message from the Laramie Animal Shelter:
“Fall is in the air, and winter is right around the corner! Take a little time in the coming days to evaluate shelters that you may have for pets that spend time outside.
In Laramie, pets that spend more than 15 minutes outside unattended must be provided with an appropriate shelter. This provision protects animals from exposure during our ever-changing weather.
If you have a pet shelter, here are a few things to consider:
- Pet houses should be insulated on all sides, including the floor.
- The shelter should be large enough for the pet to stand and turn around but not too big for the pet to heat the enclosure with body heat.
- Pet shelters should have a door flap. A flap of carpet works well.
- They should be oriented so the door is away from the prevailing wind.
- Pet shelters should be in a sunny spot during winter and a shady spot in summer.
- Bedding straw is a great choice. Textiles get damp and freeze solid, sucking the heat from your pet.
- Plastic pet shelters are usually not sufficient for Laramie winters.
Check before the snow flies to make sure your Fido and Fluffy have appropriate accommodations for our winter weather. Repair any damage. Replace lost bedding. Check for any hazards like slivers or nails that might poke your companion. Check the location.
Naturally, the best shelter is inside the house with you. However, Fido and Fluffy will appreciate having a warm, safe location to take shelter if they get caught outside in the weather. A good outdoor shelter is easy to provide. There are some premade options available and there are also good plans available online if you’d like to build your own.
Keep them warm and dry this winter. They will surely thank you for the consideration.“
