The Laramie Police Department’s School Resource Officers (SROs) are making a meaningful difference in local schools by building trust, fostering positive relationships and addressing issues before they escalate. Officers Brett Philbrick, Dan Applehans and Kyle Gross dedicate their days to working closely with students and staff, creating a safer and more supportive school environment.
Their primary focus is to respond to calls for service and engage in meaningful interactions with students. The officers divide the schools among themselves, making sure they are always available and present throughout the day.
“It helps that they have direct lines to us. If they need something, we’re just a phone call away,” said Officer Gross. This direct access has been key to solving problems quickly and building strong connections with both students and staff.
The officers have noted a significant reduction in problems within the schools since their full-time presence was established. According to staff evaluations, the SROs’ involvement has been a “really big deterrent” to various issues, including vaping, fights, and student welfare concerns.
Beyond their law enforcement duties, the SROs find great reward in their interactions with students. “All three of us love our jobs, so I think we all find it rewarding, [it’s a] good place to be. It’s nice to interact with staff and students, just having that positive interaction,” said Gross.
The officers are trusted confidants for students that offer a listening ear and support during challenging times. The Laramie Police Department’s commitment to the SRO program is important for the community. The officers have undergone specialized training, including the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) basic school and Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training, to address the unique challenges of working in a school setting.
