After 22 years, five months, and two days of dedicated service, Sergeant Paul Wick retired from the Laramie Police Department. On the morning of October 07, there was a large community turnout at the police department to recognize Wick. Many tears, laughs, and memories were shared at his retirement celebration.
The retirement ceremony started with assistance chief Robert Terry saying a few kind words about Wick.
“I worked with Sergeant Wick ever since I started; he was my sergeant in fact, and one thing that always stood out with Sergeant Wick was his dedication to us as his officers and his dedication to the department,” said Terry.
Terry then spoke briefly about Wick and his history working with the Laramie Police.
Wick became Sergeant in Laramie on Math 5th, 2000 and for 22 years served the citizens of Laramie. Wick worked hard and dedicated his services to the community and his comrades. During his career, Wick was one of four officers to earn a Medal of Valor.
“To obtain a medal of valor–they are very hard to obtain, an individual must go far beyond the call of duty and put their own lives at risk,” Terry said to the public.
After Terry said his closing thoughts, he opened the mic up to the people, so they could have to opportunity to share some favorite memories and wish Wick well in retirement. For the next 40 minutes, all of Wicks’s comrades had nothing but nice things to say.
Sergeant Wick is “somebody we all try to emulate.”
“Paul, man-he is a go-to guy, anything you needed done, ask him once, and it’s done, and you don’t have to worry about it, and it’s handled.”
“He is the calm eye in the storm…there is Paul with his crooked smile, and his calm, he would bring us and center us.”
“I’m not going to miss him because I still see him like a friend. I’ll probably see him in a couple of days.”
“You have always been the rock for so many people here, and you are one of the best. And you will be missed, but you taught me family is everything, and you are my friend, so I will see you soon.”
By the end of all the kind words, everyone felt like they had worked with Sergeant Wick throughout his career. The Sergeant is a family man, and even though he is retiring, he will still be around his comrades on the weekends, hunting, barbequing, and spending time with family.
Sergeant Wick had a remarkable career filled with passion, skill, and hard work.
The retired police Chief Dale Stalder told Wick, “So everything that has been said is accurate, but Paul, you need to go ahead and get out of the office.”
Wick responded, “There are a ton of friends in here, and I’m going to miss it; thank you, everyone.”
His comrades are proud of Wick and will miss working with their “Sarge.”
