The Laramie Police Department (LPD) is gearing up for its 5th annual Shop with a Cop event, a beloved community tradition set to take place on December 17th. This initiative aims to spread holiday cheer and strengthen connections between law enforcement and Laramie’s youth.
Working with school counselors, social workers, teachers, and staff from Albany County School Districts, the LPD selects 30 elementary students for a memorable holiday experience. Each child will be paired with an officer from agencies including LPD, the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the Laramie Game and Fish Office, and the University of Wyoming Police Department.
The highlight of the day is a $150 shopping spree at Walmart, where kids can buy gifts for their families—and themselves—while accompanied by their officer partners. UW Cheerleaders will also be on hand to help energize the festivities.
“This event changes the narrative,” said LPD Sergeant Craig Lenhardt. “Usually, when we get a call, it’s not a good day for anyone. But on this day, it’s all about fun, laughter, and meaningful conversations. The kids love it, and so do our officers.”
The impact extends beyond the shopping spree. Thanks to contributions from the Laramie Police Department Foundation, the Wyoming Hunger Initiative, and private donors, each family will receive a Christmas meal. Walmart partners with the foundation to provide the meals, while the Hilton Garden Inn generously donates 30 hams.
“Shop with a Cop is truly a community effort,” added Lenhardt. “With support from local businesses, organizations, and individuals, we’re able to create a meaningful holiday experience for these kids and their families.”
This heartwarming event not only brings joy to the children but also strengthens the bond between law enforcement and the community, making the holidays brighter for everyone involved.
