Relative Theatrics is proud to present a New Play Premiere of BLACK SKY by Amanda L. Andrei, April 20, 21, 22, 23 as a part of their 9th Season in the LPCC Gryphon Theatre. Set in a future world, the play explores the commonality of the female experience through the ages, utilizing a “gorgeous mixture of humor, poetry, and adventure.” The production is directed by Isa Jackowich and features Maddie Blanchard, Leyla Brittan, Bronwyn Field, Anna McClow, and Aubree Tafoya. Producing Artistic Director Anne Mason celebrates the script as an exciting new work that “expertly engages themes of female power, identity, and expectations in our current world – and our future one. At a pertinent age of self-discovery, the five unique female-identifying characters of this play must establish their relationships with society, with their peers, and with their own bodies, all while navigating a critical point in their psychological development.”

The play, which is “intriguingly inventive, but familiar enough to be resonant – both in its world-building and use of language – manages somehow to be foreboding without becoming dystopian, with stakes that are both epic and personal.” In a near future world where the government trains teenagers to manage disasters, five young women embark on a training scenario in the Appalachian Mountains to fix a regional electrical grid. As the girls hide secrets about their pasts and what is installed in their bodies, leadership and friendship become fractured. And when a freak electromagnetic storm hits the grid and injures the teens, they must fight for their bodies, relationships, and lives, struggling with a question that faces many of us today: how do we grow up in a world that is falling apart?

As part of their Community Organization Partnership Program, Relative Theatrics is partnering with Laramie Reproductive Health, a valuable Albany County Non-Profit that provides affordable, quality reproductive and sexual healthcare, education and counseling to anyone seeking services in a supportive, non-judgmental, professional environment. The program, which pairs an influential local non-profit with a Relative Theatrics production, aims to inspire education and advocacy for the mission of the partnered entity in order to involve local citizens and to spark conversations about the organization’s purpose and impact.

Additional partnerships include the UW Honors College and the Shepard Symposium for Social Justice. As a part of the Shepard Symposium for Social Justice, Relative Theatrics will present a free performance of select excerpts and panel discussion at the UW Art Museum on Wednesday, April 20th from 3:30-5.
