Relative Theatrics, in collaboration with the Eppson Center for Seniors, is thrilled to bring the hilariously entertaining play, “THE ROOMMATE” by Jen Silverman, to the LPCC Gryphon Theatre stage from February 9th to February 17th.
Directed by Relative Theatrics Founder and Artistic Director Anne Mason, the play offers a contemporary twist on the classic odd-couple scenario. Starring Denver actor Mari Geasair and local talent Kathy Kirkaldie, the two-person cast rejuvenates the narrative for middle-aged women.
Playwright Silverman weaves a tale of self-transformation, exploring how one’s self-perception can change rapidly under certain circumstances, altering life’s trajectory. “THE ROOMMATE,” described as equal parts nuanced and comically exaggerated, addresses themes of aging, femininity, and identity in a fresh and humorous manner.
The story follows Sharon (Geasair), recently divorced and in her mid-fifties, who seeks a roommate to share her Iowa home. Robyn (Kirkaldie), also in her mid-fifties, needs a fresh start and a place to hide. As secrets unravel, Sharon is inspired to transform her own life in this dark comedy about rerouting one’s life.
The production marks a collaboration with the Eppson Center for Seniors, a local non-profit supporting independent living since 1973. The partnership aims to inspire education and advocacy for the organization’s mission, fostering local involvement and sparking conversations about its purpose and impact.
Opening on February 9th at 7:30, with seating starting at 7:00, performances continue on February 10, 14, 15, 16, & 17 at the Gryphon Theatre. A preview pay-what-you-can performance is set for 7:30 on Thursday, February 8th, and a free Wyoming Humanities discussion will follow the performance on February 15th.
On-stage seating is limited to 50 attendees per performance, with general admission tickets available at three price points ($40/$25/$15) to enhance accessibility. Tickets can be purchased online at www.RelativeTheatrics.com, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Supported by Albany County and City of Laramie Community Partner Funds, Wyoming Humanities, and the Wyoming Arts Council, with backing from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Wyoming Legislature, “THE ROOMMATE” promises to be a thought-provoking and contemporary theatrical experience.
