Relative Theatrics presents the Wyoming Premiere of REALLY by Jackie Sibblies Drury, a stylishly contemplative play about mourning, intimacy, and the conflict between goodness and greatness as seen through the lens of photography. The production runs January 30 & 31, February 1 & 2, and February 5, 6, 7, & 8, 2020 in the LPCC Gryphon Theatre and is directed by Nathaniel Quinn, featuring local actors Olivia Cole, Justen Glover, and Alison Quaggin Harkin. We are excited to partner with the UW MLK Days of Dialogue programming to contribute to the conversation about Afrofuturism in a Rural Context. REALLY is the third play in Season 7: Capturing Humanity, following THE (curious case of the) WATSON INTELLIGENCE and AN ILIAD. Past productions include WANDA, DAISY & THE GREAT RAPTURE, I’M GONNA PRAY FOR YOU SO HARD, THE HOW AND THE WHY, THE NETHER, WHAT WOULD CRAZY HORSE DO?, VENUS IN FUR, RED, and others.

In this play about photography and value, the “themes aren’t immediately or even explicitly declared. Like prized negatives, they gradually develop in the darkroom of our mind.” When a grieving mother visits her late son’s girlfriend, the two women look back at the man they both loved, each jockeying for a claim to his legacy as a son, lover, and artist. “As the vacant niceties pile up, we come to realize that “polite” conversation…has been designed explicitly to silence the opinions and marginalize the experiences of women, African Americans, and especially African American women.” Playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury’s beautifully refined language creates “an unnerving study of art as pollution, distraction from a world fast evolving beyond aesthetics.”

Relative Theatrics strives to present thought-provoking theatre that examines the joining qualities of the human race. We believe that theatre is a forum with the power to illuminate the binding qualities of humanity and reinforce the ideals that as a society we have values that pose as common ground and emotions that relate us to one another. Taking artistic risk, we provide a community gathering place where thoughts can be exchanged about society, culture, and the power of creativity.
