A message from the Laramie Animal Shelter:
“Rabies vaccinations are required for all dogs, cats and ferrets being kept in the city of Laramie. Current rabies vaccinations protect not only the pet, but also the public health.
Rabies vaccinations are administered by any licensed veterinarian and are valid for a period of either one or three years depending on the pet’s rabies booster status.
Since rabies can be carried by any mammal, it’s important to vaccinate all companion pets against this disease. The most common culprits when it comes to rabies vector behavior in Wyoming are migratory bats, raccoons and skunks. These are three types of wild mammals that frequently come in contact with companion animals. Thus, the importance of current vaccinations for companion pets.
Even if you don’t plan to allow your cat or ferret outdoors, it’s important to keep them current on this required vaccination. Escape happens and it would be unfortunate indeed if your companion animal encountered one of the primary vector species during a walkabout without full protection from this disease. Dogs of course, are commonly allowed to use yard spaces and to walk along trails and streams where these vector species may be encountered in their travels, so it’s critical for Fido to have a current vaccination under his belt.
If you aren’t sure, check now to see if your companion animals are all current on their rabies vaccinations. Booster them if you have fallen behind. It’s a simple way to protect your pet and your family.”
