Attention all train enthusiasts and history buffs! Union Pacific Railroad has announced the eagerly awaited schedule for the Big Boy No. 4014 Westward Bound Tour. This historic steam locomotive, renowned as the world’s largest operating steam engine, will be making its grand entrance in several Wyoming communities, providing a spectacular experience for all ages.
First Stop: Laramie, Wyoming
Kicking off the tour on Sunday, June 30, Big Boy No. 4014 will travel from Cheyenne to Rawlins with its first stop in Laramie, Wyoming. The massive locomotive will be on display from 10:45 to 11:15 a.m. MT. This is an excellent opportunity for Laramie residents to witness the grandeur of this legendary machine up close.
Wyoming Tour Schedule
The Westward Bound Tour will continue through Wyoming with the following stops:
- Rawlins to Rock Springs: Monday, July 1, 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. MT, with a stop in Wamsutter.
- Rock Springs to Evanston: Wednesday, July 3, 10:00 – 10:30 a.m. MT, with a stop in Green River.
- Departing Montpelier, Idaho: Tuesday, July 23, 11:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. MT, overnighting in Rock Springs with a stop in Kemmerer.
- Rock Springs to Rawlins: Thursday, July 25, 8:45 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. MT, with a stop in Point of Rocks.
- Rawlins to Cheyenne: Friday, July 26, 11:00 – 11:30 a.m. MT, with a stop in Medicine Bow.

Heartland of America Tour
But that’s not all! Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 is set to embark on a second tour in 2024, the “Heartland of America Tour.” This fall, starting on August 29 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the locomotive will traverse 10 Midwestern and Southern states, including stops in:
- Rochelle, Illinois (Chicago metro area): September 8
- Houston, Texas: October 6
- Ft. Worth, Texas: October 10-11
The eight-week tour will cover Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas, concluding in late October.
Safety First
Union Pacific reminds all rail fans to maintain safety by staying at least 25 feet away from the tracks when viewing or photographing the locomotive. Never stand on the tracks or climb on the locomotive or equipment.
