The University of Wyoming Theatre and Dance Department is set to perform the Sophocles Greek Tragedy “Antigone” October 19th through October 22nd. This modern interpretation of the famous story is unique as it is set in 1969 Wyoming during the Vietnam War.
Adapted/Co-directed by Matthew Greenberg and Landee Lockhart, “Antigone” contains themes of power, fate, rule-of-law, autonomy, feminism, and equality, inviting the audience to consider how modern humanity justifies actions in pursuit of equality.
Anna McClow, A UW Senior who plays the character of Antigone, believes that this play is important to be bringing to her Laramie community at this time. “This show makes you think, it’s a show that Laramie has never seen before, and it’s a show that Laramie needs to see,” McClow says.
Auditions for the production were held the first week of the UW Fall semester, and the cast has been rehearsing ever since. “The cast is so close,” McClow states. “We all love each other so much, we are just such a tight ensemble.” The cast consists of eight student actors, ranging from Freshmen standing to UW Seniors.
University President Ed Seidel will be attending the opening night performance as a special guest on October 19th and will be holding a reception after the show. For the Thursday night performance, groups of Honors college students will also be in attendance.
Performances will begin at 7:30pm on the nights of October 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd, with a 2:00pm matinee on Sunday October 23rd.
