Laramie City’s Open Container Resolution Boosts Downtown Businesses

Laramie, known for its historic downtown area, has seen a positive impact from the Open Container Resolution passed by the City Council in 2021. The resolution, aimed at supporting downtown businesses during the COVID-19 Pandemic, has been reestablished this year for summer 2023 through Council Resolution 2023-27.

Starting May 25th, residents and visitors can now explore Laramie’s downtown with a beverage in hand, staying within the designated Open Container Area outlined by Resolution 2023-27. This move has turned Laramie into a more appealing destination for both locals and tourists, offering beautiful outdoor spaces like Laradise Lane for socializing and supporting local businesses, as noted by Jennifer Powers, Laramie Main Street Alliance Communications Coordinator.

The impact of the Open Container Area has been felt strongly by downtown businesses and restaurants, which can now serve more patrons than their seating capacity allows, potentially increasing sales. Retailers also benefit from the resolution, as shoppers can stroll around with beverages, enhancing the overall experience.

However, the City of Laramie emphasizes the need to adhere to specific rules to ensure safety and enjoyment for everyone. Visitors must stay within the Open Container Area between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily, avoiding the use of glass containers and staying out of the excluded alleyways. The city also urges responsible behavior, proper waste disposal, reporting underage drinking, and refraining from drinking and driving.

The Open Container Area will be available for enjoyment until October 29, 2023.
