In the heart of Laramie, Wyoming, nestled within the Laramie Plains Civic Center, lies a beacon of warmth, sustainability, and community spirit: Sunshine Coffee. Since its opening on November 5, 2023, this women-owned establishment has been more than just a coffee shop—it’s become a hub for connection, conscious consumption, and caring for both people and the planet.

Owner and founder of Sunshine Coffee, Megan Johnson, shares her journey behind the creation of this unique space. “I wanted to bring sustainable values to Wyoming as well as build a business that serves the community. Also, I love saying ‘good morning’ to people!” This blend of eco-consciousness and genuine hospitality sets Sunshine Coffee apart from the rest.

What truly sets Sunshine Coffee apart, however, is its commitment to zero waste practices. As the first zero waste coffee shop in the state, Sunshine Coffee is pioneering a new approach to caffeine consumption. By eschewing single-use consumer items such as straws, plastic cutlery, and paper cups, Sunshine Coffee minimizes waste in all forms. “We are also a community-driven business,” Megan explains, “and offer zero-cost meals to those in need by way of our Neighborhood Account.”

The Neighborhood Account, a cornerstone of Sunshine Coffee’s community outreach, allows anyone to contribute funds to support those facing food insecurity. In turn, individuals in need can access meals and beverages free of charge, fostering a sense of belonging and support within the community.

When asked about the welcoming ambiance of Sunshine Coffee, Megan beams. “I wanted Sunshine to be a warm and welcoming environment from the very start.” This commitment to hospitality is evident in every corner of the café, where customers are greeted with smiles and encouraged to linger over their coffee.

Another innovative initiative at Sunshine Coffee is the BYO Mug movement. With a focus on minimizing single-use waste, Sunshine Coffee encourages patrons to bring their own mugs for their beverages. Ceramic mugs are provided for dine-in customers, while a mug library offers to-go options for those on the move. Additionally, reusable to-go jars are available for purchase, ensuring that sustainability remains at the forefront of every sip.

Looking to the future, Sunshine Coffee is eager to continue forging partnerships with like-minded organizations and small businesses. From Coffee + Yoga sessions with Seek Yoga to lively Celtic band performances on St. Patrick’s Day, Sunshine Coffee is more than just a café—it’s a platform for collaboration and celebration.

So, whether you’re craving a caffeine fix, seeking connection, or simply looking to support a business with heart, Sunshine Coffee invites you to pull up a chair, sip in the sunshine, and join the movement towards a more sustainable and caring community, one cup at a time.
